Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

What is Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)?

Generative Artificial Intelligence, also known as Generative AI or GenAI, is a large language model (LLM) that creates digital content such as text, images, video, music and computer code. Think of it like a digital artist with a flair for creativity. It can whip up things like stories and images, produce catchy tunes, help you brainstorm ideas, plan a holiday or help you make a personal shopping list.

The list of things GenAI can do is extensive, but the value ultimately comes from the understanding of how it works and being able to use it effectively. North Island College has launched an Artificial Intelligence Student Exploration Group to support students as they embark on a discovery of GenAI. Keep reading to find out what’s it about and how to enrol.

click on the ‘DISCOVER‘ tab in Brightspace to Enrol in NIC’s ARtificial Intelligence student exploration group!

This exploration group introduces you to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and how it can be used in education. Through a series of engaging modules, you’ll have the chance to explore new ideas, practice using GenAI tools, and reflect on what you’ve learned. Each module focuses on a specific topic, giving you opportunities to build your skills, apply them in practical ways, and think about how they could impact your learning journey.

Log in to Brightspace at https://mycourses.nic.bc.ca and on the main landing page look to the blue navigation bar to see “Discover“.

Discover lists all open courses you can access for free. Look for “Artificial Intelligence Student Exploration Group” or search for it in the search bar on Discover page. Click on “Enroll in Course” to add to your courses. Then click “Open Course“. Progress through the various modules each week to explore the dynamic world of GenAI.
