Technology-Facilitated Sexualized Violence Training

North Island College invites all members of the North Island College community to complete Technology-Facilitated Sexualized Violence Training.

Key Principles for This Training

The Technology-Facilitated Sexualized Violence Training is based on nine key principles:

  • Accessibility
  • Cultural Safety
  • Decolonial Approach
  • Experience-Informed
  • Gender-Inclusivity
  • Intersectionality
  • Survivor-Centred
  • Violence-Informed and Trauma-Informed Practice
  • Healing-Centred and Transformative Justice Approaches

Additional information about these guiding principles can be found on the Intersectional Sexualized Violence Project webpage.

What Will You Learn as Part of This Training?

In this 45-minute, online course, you will increase your knowledge about technology-facilitated sexualized violence (TFSV).

Through this course, you will:

  • Familiarize yourself with the definition of TFSV and common behaviours that fall under its umbrella,
  • Unlearn common myths about TFSV,
  • Consider the insidious roles intersectionality and rape culture play in TFSV,
  • Explore TFSV scenarios and the impacts of TFSV on survivors, and how power dynamics, myths, and rape culture influence interactions, and
  • Discover ways to respond supportively when they experience, witness, or hear a disclosure of TFSV.
  • At the end of this course, you will understand how to help students, staff, and faculty recognize what TFSV is, why it persists, and how to support those who may experience it.

This training was developed by a collective of students, staff, and faculty from BC post-secondary institutions as well as representatives from the Government of British Columbia. The training was funded by the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills and Women and Gender Equality Canada.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRAINING

According to Statistics Canada, 71% of Canadian post-secondary students experienced unwanted sexualized behavior in 2019. Further, according to the Canadian Labour Congress, nearly 50% of workers have experienced sexual harassment and/or sexual violence in 2018 and 2019. These statistics highlight that this type of harm is all too common in communities like ours, and we know that it is likely that many members of our community have been personally impacted by sexual violence. Because of this reality, this training might prove to be a difficult experience for some members of our community.

Students, please reach out to Mez Jiwaji (mez.jiwaji@nic.nc.ca) and Employees, to Danean Gray (danean.gray@nic.bc.ca), if you would like to discuss alternative training. Please use the subject line Alternative to Required Education in your email.
