Getting You Involved

There are many ways to get involved at North Island College. Students say that being part of the NIC community opens doors. As they transfer to university, work towards their Interprovincial Red Seal designation or launch their careers, they take the connections that they made at NIC with them. There are a variety of ways that you can get involved in the NIC community, from participating in events to participating in formal groups.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Every year, NIC students elect two representatives to provide leadership, insight and skills on NIC’s Board of Governors. Over the year, students provide valuable perspectives while gaining tangible experience and connections to support their career goals.

The board makes policy decisions to guide the organization, determine its broad goals, overall management and general welfare. Its decisions are subject to the provisions of provincial legislation. Board members are advocates of NIC and work for the benefit of NIC as a whole. They meet about once a month; however, members can participate on board subcommittees, which require an extra time commitment. Students receive an honorarium of $2,000 per year for service on the Board of Governors.

EDUCATION COUNCIL

Every year, NIC students elect four representatives to provide leadership, insight and skills on NIC’s Education Council. Over the year, students provide valuable perspectives while gaining tangible experience and connections to support their career goals.

NIC’s Education Council has four student representatives and two main functions. It advises the Board of Governors on NIC’s educational policy, such as NIC’s mission statement, educational goals and priorities. The council also sets policy related to programs and services, such as new courses and programs, library services and student discipline procedures. They meet monthly, usually on the third Friday of the month. Students receive an honorarium of $100 per meeting for participating in monthly meetings of Education Council.

CAMPUS LIFE ASSISTANTS

NIC’s campus life assistants are all about “students connecting with students”. You’ll connect with students through a variety of activities and events throughout the year.

Campus life assistants may help with activities such as campus tours, community outreach, student contacts, mock interviews and may also help with NIC events such as Orientation Days, Information Nights, Career Fair and Open House.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM

NIC’s Student Leadership Team supports and develops skills in emerging leaders in a fun, dynamic and engaging way.

The student leaders explore many aspects of leadership, acknowledging that everything we do has impacts locally and globally.

Student leaders take part in leadership workshops and retreats, network with community, help with college events and gain volunteer hours.

NORTH ISLAND STUDENTS’ UNION

North Island Students’ Union offers services and supports for students, by students.

North Island College has four campuses & a learning centre on Vancouver Island, and each is unique. Each Winter, NISU hosts general elections for Union Representatives. Up to 25 students can become Union Reps, by nominating themselves and collecting support from either 5 fellow students for digital learners, or 10 fellow students for on campus learners.

Any student who is a union member, (all NIC students) can run as a Union Representative, if they feel the call to do so. The term for Union Reps is April 1 – April 30 the following year. If more than 25 students come forward, an election process unfolds, with a campaign period and voting days. If less than 25 students come forward, those students become Union Reps, by acclamation, meaning they take their seats without a voting process.

Once elected, a Union Representative’s role is to engage with students through in person events, social media and online events with an aim to fostering connection and community among NIC students.
