What is Digital Learning?

Digital Learning is about a translation of a face-to-face course (that typically would happen in-class and on-campus) but is now being moved to new formats for learning. Digital learning means an adjustment to how you used to learn. There are two videos on this page for new and returning students to explore and learn more about digital learning formats at NIC.

What is Digital Learning At North Island College? 10 Things to Know for Academic Success

This video was created in Fall of 2020 but much of the content still applies even though we have blended and face-to-face classes now 2022 onwards. This video includes Closed Captions. Select CC icon under the video. There is also a handout of the video’s contents including a transcript of the narration – see PDF

Blended Learning means:

  • You will do most of your learning digitally, but will come to campus for required hands-on learning in labs, shops, and studio
  • Practical and other work placements may be held at community locations.
  • Safety measures are in place including cleaning and physical distancing with only small numbers of students in class at a time.

Digital Learning Unscheduled (Asynchronous) means:

  • You will learn wherever you have access to a computer and the internet.
  • You will not need to come to campus to complete your course.
  • Your instructor will give you a schedule of assignments and activities with specific due dates.
  • Instructors will use a variety of learning technology platforms for the course.

Digital Learning Scheduled (Synchronous) means:

  • You will learn wherever you have access to a computer and the internet.
  • You will not need to come to campus to complete your course.
  • You will primarily meet online with your instructor on specific dates and times as per the schedule.
  • Your instructor will give you a schedule of assignments and activities with specific due dates.
